When Disaster Strikes
Filed under: Personal Finance, Young Adults, Adults, Retirees
It's tornado season in the Midwest but disasters come in all varieties. Each year tornados, floods, fires, earthquakes, etc. leave people without homes and entire towns without power for extended periods of time. Here is a check list of financial matters to keep in mind should a disaster occur. Call it your own personal Disaster Relief Kit. Remember the following:
Cash - Have small bills and change on hand.
Debit/ATM Cards - To access your checking and savings account since out of town checks may not be accepted if you relocate.
Access to Online Banking - To keep track of your accounts, transfer money, pay bills, etc. If you receive bills and statements electronically, you can access them no matter where you are.
Safe Deposit Box Key - If you store important documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, car titles, etc. in your safe deposit box you'll need access to them.
Join SAFE - If you haven't already, join DECU's fraud protection program -- Secure Accounts For Earthmover Members. One person's disaster could be another person's opportunity for fraud.
For your convenience, if we were to lose power city-wide, Earthmover's drive-ups would continue to operate.
