General Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I use the $25.00 in my savings account to cover my outstanding checks?
The $25.00 in your savings account maintains your membership in the credit union. If we were to use the $25.00 to cover checks, your membership would not be in good standing, and possible expulsion from the credit union could result.
Why do I need to show an I.D. every time I make a transaction?
In order to better protect your money and account information, our tellers are instructed to ask for your membership card or a driver's license. While some tellers may come to know you, and therefore not ask for ID, others tellers may be new or not know you and ask for identification. We are not trying to make things difficult, just safer for you and your money.
Why can't I cash my friends check, he endorsed it over to me on the back?
When we accept a check for deposit or to be cashed, we must be able to verify the signatures of the person(s) endorsing the check. Therefore we will only accept checks made payable, on the front of the check, to a member of the credit union. Encourage the person who would like to sign the check over to you to open an account with us, then they would have no problems cashing a check at the credit union.
Why do I need to have a savings account with the credit union?
Your $25.00 in a savings account means you own one share of the credit union and are a part owner with full voting rights. Once you are a member/owner of the credit union, you are eligible to take advantage of the other services available at the credit union. If your savings balance falls below the $25.00 level, you will need to make a deposit to bring the balance to back up to $25.00 to maintain your membership.
Why, when I phone the credit union, does it seems like I always get the voice mail system?
All calls are immediately answered by the voice mail and your options are listed for you. If you would like to bypass the system and speak to someone you may punch in that person's extension. (to see a list of people's extensions, click here.) You will also get a person's voice mail if they are already on the phone with a member, they have someone at their desk, or they are currently away from their desk. We apologize that we cannot always answer your call, but we make every effort to return your call in a timely manner.
How many times can I use my ATM card before I get charged a fee?
You may use machines owned by Decatur Earthmover as many times as you would like without being charged a fee. You may use your cards at other machines five (5) times each month without being charged a fee. After the five (5) free times at other machines, you will be charged $1.00 every time you use a non Earthmover ATM machine through the end of the month.
Does Decatur Earthmover charge a fee to use their ATM machines?
We do not charge a fee to use our machines (click here for a list of DECU machines), whether you are a member of the credit union or not. To get a list of other ATM machines that do not charge a fee to use click here.
Why was my ATM card taken by the machine?
There can be several reasons why the ATM machine failed to return your card. The ATM machine may have malfunctioned, if the PIN number is entered incorrectly three times the machine will also keep the card. Another possibility is if the card is not taken out of the machine within the allotted time period after the transaction is completed, the machine will keep the card. Lastly, the machine may have been instructed to take the card by us. If the card was reported lost, your accounts currently have negative balances, or if there has been NSF activity on your account, we will instruct the machine to keep your ATM card.
Why won't the ATM machine let me withdraw more than $100.00?
Our ATM cards have a withdrawal limit of $500.00 per 24 hour period. If there is a problem with the phone lines or the in-house system is down, we are unable to verify balances in your accounts. In this situation, the withdrawal limit is lowered to $100.00 per 24 hour period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but this prevents members from overdrawing their accounts by mistake.
