I’ve been working at DECU for about five months now. I’ve been a member for over ten years. Before I started working here, I knew a little bit about our services. (I knew nothing about finances, but that’s a different story.) I had a debit card and online banking. I loved using spare change round up to save money without trying. Everything else immediately felt too confusing or too time consuming to deal with. Boy was I wrong!
As I’ve researched the products and services we offer, I’ve been signing up for all of them so I can gain first-hand knowledge about how things work. In preparation to write a blog about Buzz Points I thought I’d sign up. It seemed like a great program, I just never took the time to do anything about it.
Join me as I tell a riveting financial story (and you thought those didn’t exist) that ends in FREE MONEY.
Earlier this week I decided to sign up for Buzz Points. Quick back story: buzz points are the points our members earn every time they use their DECU debit or credit cards. These points can be redeemed for gift cards to local or chain stores and restaurants. You can also use points to donate to local non-profits, which is super cool! So how do you start earning these points? All you have to do is sign up.
Flash forward to me signing up. I started at www.decu.com and searched ‘Buzz Points.’ I clicked on “enroll in buzz points now” and was taken to the Buzz Points site. From there the sign up is so easy! You just need your name, member number (you can find this at the bottom of a DECU debit card or check), last 4 of your social and an email. Once you enter that info and hit submit, you’re good to go!
Here is where I had issues. The Buzz Points website was telling me I couldn’t sign up! Frustrated, I hopped onto our live chat and asked our awesome contact center staff what was up. From the back end, they could see that I already had an account. Apparently I had already signed up for Buzz Points YEARS ago! I had used an old email address and, because of who I am as a person, spelled it wrong.
I got that issue resolved and changed my email address to a current one. It was actually really easy, quick, and painless, even with the slight hitch (which was, admittedly, all my fault). Feeling more confident I logged into my account. This is the best part! I had TWO THOUSAND unused points I had racked up without knowing! That’s $20 worth of gift cards! I didn’t even realize I was earning points because I had completely forgotten I even signed up.
Then I realized, that’s the beauty of the program. Our members spend less than five minutes signing up one time and then earn points and rewards without changing a thing about their lives.
Take it from me. I was a disbeliever. I didn’t want to “waste my time” signing up for things that I’d never even take the time to figure out how to use. But present me is SO THANKFUL to past me for taking those five minutes to (terribly) sign up for Buzz Points. A free $20? Past me rocks!
Speaking as a long-time member, Buzz Points is an awesome feature that I would highly recommend taking advantage of. It’s basically free money that’s being wasted by not signing up. To make things even easier, here’s a link to the sign-up page.
Stay tuned as I embark on my quest to spend these points and blog that process as well.
Update: Sad news. Apparently you have to use your points within a certain timeframe or you lose them. ONE DAY after writing this blog, I lost 488 points! I was devastated. Buzz points expire after 24 months, so use ‘em or lose ‘em. I wonder how many other points I’ve lost over the past few years…
My sad, lost points. :(
