Keeping your house clean can be daunting. Things pile up, schedules get busy, and well, life just happens. If you’re anything like me, it seems impossible to keep up with the cleaning, and yet the mess is so distracting. Well, now that it’s Spring, it seems like the perfect time to get cleaning and organizing under control! Here are a few spring cleaning and house tidying tips we found.
1. Create a game plan
Extreme cleaning calls for extreme planning. Make a list of everything you need to get done. I like to write down every single task, no matter how small, because it feels great when you can cross off something. However, for some people those long lists can be overwhelming. For instance, Abby from Just a Girl and Her Blog felt her giant list was unmanageable. Instead of writing down every single task, she chose five tasks per room that she wanted to make sure she accomplished. Whichever plan sounds more appealing to you, do for it! There’s no wrong way.
2. Work from top to bottom
This seems obvious, but it’s easy to get caught up in vacuuming, only to realize you’ve vacuumed the entire house without ever dusting any surfaces! It helps to take it room by room and work from the top down. If you have a two-story house, you can even go so far as to clean the top floor first, just in case. You never know what kind of dust can float down from those ceilings and tall book shelves!
3. KonMari it up
If you haven’t heard of the newest Netflix craze, Marie Kondo’s Tidying Up, you’re missing out! Each episode, Marie visits a different family and helps them tidy up their living space. She calls her method the KonMari method and it’s become popular. Whether you want to go all in, or just take some inspiration from her, it is helpful to get rid of things as you go. While you clean your kitchen, throw out some of the pots and pans you’ve never used. While in the bedroom, choose 10 articles of clothing to donate. Or, go full KonMari and dump everything you own on your bed and have at it!
4. Clean your cleaning products
Seriously. Be sure to sanitize the items you use to clean with as well. If you’ve been using a sponge, be sure to get it wet and pop it in the microwave for a few minutes to kill the germs. You can use vinegar to sanitize your mop and your dishwasher. You don’t want to be cleaning your house with unclean materials. Sure, it will look nice, but in the end, you’re just spreading the germs.
5. Set a schedule
Once you’ve spring cleaned until you’re content, get a game plan in place to keep it clean. We suggest creating a weekly cleaning schedule. This breaks up the work into smaller, more doable chunks, instead of spending your entire weekend cleaning. Clean Mama has an amazing weekly cleaning guide you can download here. Basically, just pick one thing to do for about 10-15 minutes a day and get it done. For example, on Mondays, clean the bathrooms. On Tuesdays, do all the dusting. Then add in a couple daily and monthly tasks and voila – your home is always clean!
